Essay – Patricia Nauman for 5th Dan Testing
By Instructor Nauman 4th Dan
“The walking
is easy if the Road is Flat; that is why the Good Lord made Mountains so we
could learn how to fly….There are times when you have to crawl, ,lose your
grip, trip, and fall,,,that’s when you find
yourself.” “ This
is an excerpt from a country song by Lone Star.
“Throughout
the world, people have become used to instant gratification, to take out food
and knowledge. So we thought that we
would advertise some instant wisdom in the martial arts. Of course, we would be lying; knowledge and
excellence are as difficult as they are rare….Yet, on the other hand, we
believe that the tradition of the martial arts has lasting worth, and offers
self-development and self-fulfillment to many people today who have
little. And, again, those who dare to
make the effort, to risk to attain excellence of the whole, thought and
actions, to become clear as what they are and what they are doing,…” Quoted from “THE WAY TO GO, DAESHIK KIM AND ALLAN BACK.”
As distance
as these two cultures appear, I hear them speaking to dedication, perseverance,
and discipline required to succeed and I hope I have in some small way been
able to grasp the full meaning what has been offered to me through martial arts
with Grand Master Yu, as my Teacher.
More than
ten years ago I wrote my first Personal Progress report for Grand Master Yu,
Part of that same report follows:
Initially I
began for two reasons: physical fitness and self-defense. Now it is an integral part of my every
day. The practice of this art form has
given back to me self-confidence, patience, mental discipline and an overall
physical fitness that includes coordination, flexibility and strength. ,,,, And
just as important, if not more so, Martial Arts emphasizes
and builds respect not only for others but for one’s self. Within the practice group, a special loyalty
develops with all class members. The
senior and Black Belts display an overriding concern and willingness to help
others learn, realizing the perseverance necessary to accomplish and perfect
each step. ….
This was
written before I obtained my Black Belt and years later even more I understand
the reason I am here now is not the reason I started. To continue quoting other sources – this is
from my motorcycle time – it is not the destination – it is the journey. I am proud to be here today to test for my O
Dan rank; but it is the journey itself that has been invaluable. It is what I learn every time I step on this
mat from my fellow instructors and from Grand Master Yu. The best part of any journey is the people we
meet along the way. I am fortunate to
count as friends Master Instructor Giselle McGaughy,
Master Instructor Howard Hirtler, Instructor Chuck
Sims, Instructor Mike Young, and Mr. Chris Love.
My progress
would not be complete without talking about our Black Belt Meetings with Grand
Master Yu teaching from “Myung Shim BoKam” – Valuable Mirror to Enlighten One’s Soul. This instruction from Grand Master Yu is to
teach us the Way of Life through our physical being coordinated with Mind and
Soul. The basic premise is simple: we should also try good things – do not try
evil things; but we humans seem to have trouble adhering to this basic
philosophy. It is not only speaking good;
but learning – understanding with both mind and body, and thus, our Academy
Motto:
A Sound Mind in a Sound Body
Each chapter
has a special message but there were a few that have stayed with me in a deeper
way. Chapter Four
“Chung Ki Pyeon – Build Character First”. As it goes there were three people walking in
the street; one will be my teacher; one will be better; one will be worse. We learn from everyone around us, even if
better or worse; but learn both well.
Chapter
Seven “Ka Song Pyeon-Conscious
Builds Character” The primary emphasis is: do not lose one’s temper. Grand Master Yu’s were, “Character like
water, if lose it is hard to get back – it spreads and flows. If one can accept humiliation for one day,
one can save 100 days of wrong regret.”
As part of
my Progress, which I hope never ends, I would like to end with Yu’s Academy
Pledge:
1.
I
will practice the Martial Arts with Conscience and dignity.
2.
I
will maintain the honor and noble traditions of the Martial Arts and Yu’s
Academy.
3.
I
will give to my teachers and higher ranks the respect and gratitude which is
their due.
4.
My
classmates will be my brothers and sisters.
5.
I
will maintain respect for human life and I will not use Martial Arts contrary
to the laws of humanity.
6.
I
make these promises solemnly, freely, and upon my honor.
With deep
respect and honor I thank Kwan Jang Nim Yu for his
guidance, patience and support and helping me to be where I am today in all
ways.
